(Jan. 23, 2017) — As was predicted over the weekend, President Donald Trump has reversed the “Mexico City” rule pertaining to U.S. funding of overseas organizations which promote or perform abortions.

Trump signed the executive order late Monday morning rescinding the policy set by Barack Obama when he took office in 2009 which permitted U.S. dollars to fund international abortion providers.

Taxpayers funds are provided to overseas agencies via USAID.

Two other executive orders were signed on Monday to freeze federal hiring and to remove the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), respectively.

The Mexico City policy is so named as a result of President Ronald Reagan’s having originated it while at the United Nations International Conference on Population held there in 1984.

International Planned Parenthood will be one of the groups affected.
