“TAKE IT WE DID”

Were European settlers acting out of greed when they made “treaties” with Native Americans?

(May 13, 2014) — In order for our species to have survived for as long as it has, numerous defense mechanisms have been put in place to insure its survival. The brain’s ability to conveniently block bad memories has allowed us to move forward through time without the burdens of regret piled upon regret.

I was watching an old movie the other night where the star, Frank Sinatra, had a hard life because of boozing, and all through the movie he kept saying that he had to stop drinking but never did. Same story, day after day, coming up with a brand-new solution to his problem, but in the end his inability to act on the solution did him in.

It reminded me of the plight our country is in today and how we got to this point: on the precipice of disaster. Certainly, education plays a part, but so, too, does the diminished gene pool of all of our Civil War dead. A wide-open country was there for the taking, and take it we did through brilliant land purchases and the first widespread use of “eminent domain.”  But we “needed” people to steal the land from the Indians, so we portrayed the American Indian as sub-human and having no redeeming qualities.

One could make the argument that the American Indian founded the Frank Lloyd Wright philosophy of building within the environment. One could also say that the tribes of America were the founders of “Going Green.” Even today, in the Year of our Lord, 2014, we see clear cutting whenever a new building or road is being constructed. The White Man has learned nothing of how to protect the very land he lives in, and we’re concerned with losing our Constitution when we can’t even take care of a little stream or sapling.

Since the beginning of human history, the number of children was dependent on the survival rate coupled with the ability to feed them. Thanks to our system of giving people food for nothing (no work = getting fed), we made a rule that the more kids they have the more food/money/housing they receive, and still no work/payback is required. It’s a downhill spiral: the acceptance of being lazy and slothful is a result of what’s in the White House today.

I worked for the Housing Authority for a spell.  I’d get to work at 8:00 in the morning (with the thermometer already above the 90-degree mark), and there they’d be, all lined up, sitting on folding chairs in the shade, sipping on large cans of Colt 45 beer: front-row seats to watch workers (fools?) sweat and toil on their behalf. “Why, I got a brand new BMW convertible” and “Look at the fools work while we sit here drinking ice-cold beer.”

Add it up: killing American Indians and stealing their land; Americans’ complete disregard for their environment; reproducing without consequences; not comprehending the advantages of a good education; the advantages of reading over investing the same time watching movies; treating tax dollars as money other than their own; and the ability to borrow without limit brings us to the edge of the cliff. The scales are stacked in such a way as to allow the Constitution to be ignored by greed, run over by avarice, and circumvented by enabling those who are striving (and succeeding) in the complete overthrow of our country from a capitalistic system to failure (Socialism), from a Christian nation to an Islamic Caliphate.

Same story, day after day: stop any future immigration of Muslims and deport the ones who are here, but our inability to act on the solution will do us in.
