ISRAEL STRIKES DAMASCUS TO STOP ARMS SHIPMENTS TO HEZBOLLAH

by Sharon Rondeau

Syria has operated under “emergency law” since 1963 and has been embroiled in a brutal civil war since the Arab Spring uprisings of 2010-2011

(May 5, 2013) — Israel has dropped bombs on Damascus, Syria for the second time in three days.

The first strike was confirmed by Israeli officials on Saturday and was made with the purpose of keeping “advanced weapons” from being transferred from Syria to the militant terrorist organization, Hezbollah, and “other extremist groups.”

A reporter for CNN tweeted that a Syrian official termed the attacks a “declaration of war.”

Syria has been involved in a nearly two-year-old civil war between supporters of dictator Bashir Assad and the rebels who wish to remove him from power.  Barack Hussein Obama has stated that “Assad must go,” and several reports have said that the Obama regime has secretly been supplying the Syrian rebels with firearms as they attempt to topple Assad.

Movement of firearms and other materials is suspected to have taken place through the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, where Amb. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed on the night of September 11, 2012.  Three whistleblowers are scheduled to testify beginning on Wednesday on what is expected to be “startling” information about an alleged State Department cover-up of its response to known security lapses in Benghazi.

In February, the Obama regime reportedly denied that it was participating in training Syrian rebels while journalist Aaron Klein stated that the U.S. had been aiding the rebels “for months.”

Klein also reported that Stevens had helped to coordinate the recruitment and screening of fighters by Saudi Arabia to be sent to Syria to help bring down the Assad regime.  Members of Al Qaeda and related terrorist groups were reportedly among the recruits.

Iran is an ally of Assad and, like Syria, considers Israel an enemy.  The armaments struck by Israel on Sunday were reportedly manufactured in Iran.

Sunday’s strike purportedly made by Israel targeted a research center which Israel had struck in January as well as an airport, causing several explosions, according to eyewitnesses.

U.S. United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice has accused Iran of “supporting the (Syrian) government in perpetrating the violence.”  Rice was Obama’s choice for Secretary of State as Hillary Clinton’s term ended but was criticized for stating on five Sunday talk shows aired on September 16, 2012 that the cause of the Benghazi attack was an obscure internet video when intelligence data showed that U.S. officials were aware that it had been a terrorist attack.

Last month, an Iranian legislator accused Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia of working against Assad and of having become the West’s “puppets.”  Israeli National News also reported at that time that “officials indicated a few months ago that Iran and Hizbullah, its Lebanese terror proxy, have been building a network of militias inside Syria to preserve and protect their interests in the event that Assad’s government falls or is forced to retreat from Damascus.”

On April 29, an Iranian official warned that “any Western move to assist forces seeking the overthrow of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad would trigger a regional war that would engulf Israel” and that Israel “would not survive.”

Syria reportedly used chemical weapons against its own people to which the Obama regime has yet to react.  In light of the Israeli strikes, Syrian has accused Israel of “supporting terrorists.”

A regional war which could involve the United States and other countries is possible, although Iran and Syria reportedly believe that Israel and its allies would retain an advantage in such a conflict.
